Transparency (Alpha Channel) in video
« on: August 25, 2009, 07:26:19 AM »
Hi,

I am very much hoping for a solution to my problem. I have video clips with an aplha channel (eg. a rounded corner rectangle with video inside). The canvas outside the rectangle is transparent. When I bring this into Scala the transparency part turns black, so it doesn't seem to import alpha channels. But I just can't believe that 'the worlds leading end-to-end software solution.....digital signage' doesn't support alpha channels in video.
Please help me work this out.

Use a FLV with an alpha channel inside a SWF.

Thanks Stephane,

I'm working with Final Cut Studio and Apple Motion and it is quit awkward to try and get a flash file from those apps. I would have to try and convert them. Do you perhaps know an alternative option?

Regards,

Leon

You can use Flash from Adobe. Also you might be able to do it with After Effects but we didn't test that yet!

There are also 3rd party software like;

Video2Swf

On2 Flix product line

Good luck

But keep in mind, you can't get transparency from one frame to that below!
Inside a ScalaScript you can make as much transparency as you like, but
a frame itself is always solid! sadly

Stefan, (BTW great name :-)

Actually, there is a way to have a channel "Frame" transparent in Scala.
You need to manually edit your script, set the Backdrop command opacity to 0 like this. Backdrop(Opacity(0),
Voila, no more background, any elements in this script if use on a frame on top of other frames will be on a transparent background.

Have fun with it.

Transparency Alpha Channel in video

Maybe I just dont get it, but I am trying to adapt my watermark to use the Alpha Channel Transparency mentioned in the sticky above.  Ive tried plenty of combinations using Photoshop and layer masks, but the best I can get is a solid white watermark with a transparent background.  I can use PS to reduce the blending, so some of the background shows through the watermark, but I had to do that with the traditional watermark.

Is there some secret Im missing, or is that the way its supposed to work?

TIA

Vatrik,

Just insert Backdrop(Opacity(0), in the display command.
