a completely mundane player

This is a perfectly normal display, almost completely custom. inside the screen is an OEM frame, below that are timers, any number of cereal ports monitoring stuff like fans, temperature, light level, cheesy smell, you name it. An industrial Q45 board running quad core with an evil radeon 5500 does all the heavy lifting.

The OS is windows embedded standard (I can more or less make images to suit given the hardware) with a minor frob. Nothing special there. SCALA player release 5, version 4.0.x

The problem is this version doesnt like radeon cards AT ALL. Any time there is video or flash, it attempts to melt the card, resulting in jerkiness. (If you have this problem, upgrade to 5.x or throw the radeon away and get an Nvidia, the latter might be cheaper!)

If you look closely, you will see there are 2 tiny cameras in the top over the middle of the screen. I cannot think of anything nice to say about them, but if you are doing people counting, do NOT skimp on the camera cost!

All in all, this is very nice hardware and a pleasure to look at.
Consumer level hardware has nothing on the monitoring this has.
