Problem with Content Manager Media thumbnails
« on: April 23, 2009, 09:31:32 AM »
Ever since I have upgraded the content Manager Server to Scala 5 Release 4, I have not been able to consistenly get thumbnails for my uploaded media files. The thumbnails will work for a couple of days, then any new media file will have a grainy, static filled picture as its thumbnail. When I reboot the server, I am then able to Generate Thumbnails for any media file that has a bad one, but the problem just repeats itself. Anyone got any answers for this?

Basil;

This is a behaviour that Scala engineering is aware of, but can't reproduce consistently at their labs.
The solution so far is to restart (stop and restart) Scala Server Support Service or reboot the server. In our servers (that are running Release 4.0.3) one boot and/or restart solved the problem for good.

We are expecting a solution for this issue in the next release.

Norberto.

We've installed v.4.0.7 on the content manager, but the grey thumbnail problem remains. Is there any news about this?

It seems that now (r4.0.13) that these problems are happening very less frequently than Release 4.0, but they still happens once in a while.
Just restart Scala Server Support to have your thumbnails creation back. Oh, but you'll have to generate all the fuzzy thumbs Content Manager did not create succesfully.

Norberto.

I doesn't work with just restarting the Scala Server Support for us, still grey images.. I will try to reboot the whole server later and let you know :(  (we have the latest update 5.04). Just rebooted a couple of times and there's still a grey image. So the soulution above isn't in effect..

I migrated to 5.0.8 because this problem, and it has been solved. One side note though; 5.0.8 does change the way that players and the content manager communicate with each other (and support won't clearly tell you *what* was changed, not mentioned in release notes either). Split networks (both internal and external ip access) might have to be a little careful. But the thumbnails do show up every time now :)

Oh, and if there are empty thumbnails after 5.0.8, of course just update/reupload that specific item and the new one should be generated.

Since today, all our thumbnails show the picture of an empty template instead of a message (so they all look the same and we have no preview).
Once in a while we had the problem that we got no new thumbnails at all, but that could easily be solved by rebooting the server. This new problem seems a little more difficult.
We use r5.0.13, which worked fine until this afternoon (<-- edit: I'm not really sure it worked fine at first; I only got the first complaints today, but is seems the problem was already present yesterday).

I uploaded the templates again to the content manager and now the thumbnails do appear. Strange (the templates have not been changed).

I don't think I have ever seen thumbnails work.

Here is a clue from the server though:

Some thoughts here,
1 This is a headless server, you are never going to find the mouse.
2 This is a server, it has no sound. Even if it did, the chances of hearing it over the turbines are negligible.
3 What has sound got to do with a thumbnail?

The primary reason you do not have Thumbnails is that you are running the software on an unsupported Operating System.

CM5, all releases prior to Release 5.1, should be run in Windows 2003 or Windows XP.

Only in Release, 5.1, will there be  support for Server 2008 or Windows 7.

Better late than never I guess. Can I point out how long in the tooth those two are?
(I dread having to start using the bloated goat that is W7 embedded.)

For the record, it seems that 2k8 r2 will not let services do DirectX things and you use the software renderer to generate thumbnails.
It would have been nice to know that this was the reason why it wasn't supported.

I found a way around this problem, install vmware, install xp under that and it works.
It's slow, but you can get the dongle through (M$ virtual pc doesn't.) and if you're bored or heroic,
you can have a backup server where you just shove the dongle in and start the vm.

Actually:

We don't expect much interest in Win7E for Players--Designers and Content Managers, yes but not for Players--as WES2009, EMB-XPP, and XPE-FP2007 will be available until 2015.

Since it is very possible to have a minimal XPE install of about 340MB and have a very nice limited (no TV-Capture/Video-Streaming) Scala5 Player--or a full function/7-languages XPE at about 1.4GB that runs very nicely in 1GB of RAM--and both of which make systems employing 4GB FDM's practical Players--I suspect that the vast majority of larger-scale customers are going to pass on Win7-anything until such a time that 4GB of RAM and 32GB Flash are considered trivial" items...

The upshot is that Win7E adds about $200,000 in cost to a 1,000 Player network for _zero_ benefit.

Its the type of number that pencil-pushers have an interest in not spending when they do not have to.

As for the "Software Render" ability of Win08R2--no joy.  From a service it can only be used under DirectX10.1/DirectX11 API's--which will mean completely re-writing our 3D Renderer.  {better to port of OGL in that case}  It was much more practical for us to write our own specific software compositor for the functionality required to generate thumbnails.

Doing our form of "Multi-Media Compositing" in the VISTA/Win7/Win08 generations of OS has required a *LOT* of hoop jumping--as Microsoft and the ??AA's are working very hard to permit the types of functionality required from even existing!
